The Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences in Hollywood annually delivers the highest award of the Hollywood movie industry , the Oscars . For the 2014 Oscars , the ceremony will take place on March 2 , presented by Ellen DeGeneres .

The Oscar is the best known and coveted Hollywood movie . Offered annually by the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences ( in the original: Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences or AMPAS ) since 1929 , the award was an idea of ​​Louis B. Mayer , head of the studio Metro -Goldwyn - Mayer ( MGM ) . In the first year , the winners of the trophy went to night ceremonies already knowing who had won in every category . Then the Academy went on to release the winners to the press , which could stamp their headlines the next morning . But everything changed after the Los Angeles Times published the list before the awards , spoiling the surprises . And so , since 1941 , the envelopes are opened only in the awards ceremony .

Voting is done in two shifts . In the first members of the Academy , active in film production process people vote within their area of expertise and are entitled to one vote also for Best Film . It is where we find the nominees. With the list of candidates in hand , jurors receive ballots that will decide the winners . To be eligible for the award , the film must have at least 40 minutes (except in the categories of short films ) , to be displayed in Los Angeles between 1 January and 31 December and have copies in 35mm or 70mm or digital 24 or 48 frames per second.
