There are several fundamental differences between the movie and the original material . For example , the book presents the main demigods having twelve years each , and in the film, they have sixteen . In the film , the main villains are Hades and Luke , unlike the book, which presents Kronos (which is not even mentioned in the film ) as the great antagonist. Another difference between adaptation and the book is Annabeth Chase in the movie is brunette and has blue eyes , and in the book, she is blonde and has gray eyes , like his mother , the goddess Athena . Also, in the book , Annabeth is in love with Luke , and only later , she begins to take an interest in Percy (which is implicit and explicit in the book in the movie ) .
